After our long walk along the Left Bank, we had to pass the Eiffel Tower again. I was fascinated by the massive, yet intricate iron work and then (why didn't I know this?) by the 72 names of "chemists, physicists, mathematicians, astronomers, various specialties within engineering, and several other sciences." A quick bit of research reveals that the engravings were painted over around the beginning of the 20th century and then restored between 1986 - 1987. While you can barely make them out in this view, the 18 names on this side are quite clear in print.
